Nature Tours
At the north end of San Pedro Town, an 80 foot channel,
Boca del Rio, separates the northern and southern areas
of Ambergris Caye. A pull ferry operates until 8 pm daily
to take golf carts, bikes and pedestrians back and forth
across the channel. There are fewer resorts north of town
and because the area is less developed, your chances of
catching a glimpse of wildlife increase as you proceed north.
The road north ends near Journey's end Resort (3.5 miles), then follow the beach, Mata Chica is 5 miles, Portofino is 6 miles and Avalon is 7 miles. Palermo is 13 miles, Punta Azul is 16 miles, Robles is 20 and Rocky point is 22 miles. Depending on your conditioning, you can set out on bicycle (round trip) in a day!
Bacalar Chico National park lies at the northernmost end of Ambergris Caye and is
a protected sanctuary for mangroves, birds and sea life. It
is an excellent location for birding. Bird Caye is another
place to see a vast array of colorful and
exotic birds.
Boats can be hired to take you up the coast, where
sea-turtles have sometimes been found on isolated beaches.
At the urging of environmental organizations, the Belizean
government has expanded the "no-hunting" season
for turtles; as a result, the turtle population is slowly
increasing. Hunting of endangered species is outlawed completely.
Manatee Watch
There are few places in the world where you can still see
the gentle manatee. The wonder of watching these huge animals
in their natural habitat is a sight you won't soon forget.
Full day trips include lunch, snorkeling, and of course,
a chance to
watch the manatees.
Manatee Watch - Trip One: Travel by boat to the
Belize River to view the giant manatee. Trip also includes
3 snorkel stops including Goff's Caye along with a short
stop-over on Caye Caulker.
Manatee Watch -Trip Two: Take
a trip over to the mouth of the Belize River to see the
amazing manatees. Then slowly cruise up the Belize River
with frequent stops for birds sightings, crocodiles,
orchids and bats. Beer, soft drinks, and lunch included.

where you will see nesting Roseate Spoonbills, White Ibis,
Pelicans, Herons, Cormorants and Frigate Birds.
