Nature ~ Ambergris Caye

Nature Tours

Ambergris Cay has garnered such a world-wide reputation for its water-sports that sometimes visitors can forget there are other remarkable activities to experience here.

Bacalar Chico National park lies at the northernmost end of Ambergris Caye and is a protected sanctuary for mangroves, birds and sea life. It is an excellent location for birding. Bird Caye is another place to see a vast array of colorful and
exotic birds.

Boats can be hired to take you up the coast, where sea-turtles have sometimes been found on isolated beaches. At the urging of environmental organizations, the Belizean government has expanded the "no-hunting" season for turtles; as a result, the turtle population is slowly increasing. Hunting of endangered species is outlawed completely.

Manatee Watch
There are few places in the world where you can still see the gentle manatee. The wonder of watching these huge animals in their natural habitat is a sight you won't soon forget. Full day trips include lunch, snorkeling, and of course, a chance to
watch the manatees.

Manatee Watch - Trip One: Travel by boat to the Belize River to view the giant manatee. Trip also includes 3 snorkel stops including Goff's Caye along with a short stop-over on Caye Caulker

Manatee Watch -Trip Two: Take a trip over to the mouth of the Belize River to see the amazing manatees. Then slowly cruise up the Belize River with frequent stops for  birds sightings, crocodiles, orchids and bats. Beer, soft drinks, and lunch included.

Bird Watching
Hire a boat to visit two nearby "bird cayes" where you will see nesting Roseate Spoonbills, White Ibis, Pelicans, Herons, Cormorants and Frigate Birds.

Inland Tours

Many visitors to Ambergris Caye use the island as a home base to explore the inland jungle and archaeology sites on day trips or book packages that include several days on the caye and several days at jungle resorts so they can experience both sides of Belize.

Lamanai
Travel to the mainland then overland to Tower Hill, which is near Orange Walk Town, then North 22 miles by boat up the New River lagoon to the ancient Maya city of Lamanai.  Along the way sightings of crocodiles, iguana, monkeys and tropical birds are a common.

Altun Ha & Baboon Wildlife Sanctuary Tour
Travel up the North River through mangrove channels for 30 to 40 minutes before arriving at the small village of Bomba before traveling overland to Altun Ha.

Next travel the Belize River to the Baboon Sanctuary. View monkeys, iguanas, birds and crocodiles up close and personal.  Howler monkey families watch as you travel upriver through the savannah while iguanas sun themselves along the river.

Another option is to include an overnight in Belize's northern most town of Corozal with your visit to Belize.

We can arrange airfare to Corozal where you can visit Lamanai, Altun Ha, Baboon Sanctuary, Crooked Tree Wildlife Sanctuary and more, as part of a Corozal Overnight Package. (See Details)

Guided Cave Tubing - Travel inland to Caves Branch for an underground float trip. While you're there, experience a jungle
Zip-line Canopy Tour. You can also visit Tikal By Air.
